Everyday Poetry

Recently, one of the wellness courses I stumbled upon was about writing poetry. I never imagined I would randomly click on a course about poetry, but I'm so glad I did.

The very first lesson was about awefinding the ordinary things in life that fill us with wonder. My list became surprisingly long. A simple pen that captures our thoughts. A fallen leaf reminding me that change is a natural part of life. Little things that I would normally overlook suddenly became meaningful.

The next lesson invited us to create our own personal mythology—to give these everyday objects a story and a little more significance. Then we explored how to connect our inspirations with our senses and emotions.

That day, I had just baked a peach cobbler, so naturally, it became my inspiration.

Ah! What a joyous smell!
White, surprisingly, smells sweet.
A touch of yellow—
buttery (is that even a word?)—
then brown...
with just a little crunch.
Suddenly,
my mouth waters
with gold.

I smiled when I finished writing it. Who knew a peach cobbler could become a poem?

Since taking the course, I've started paying a little more attention to the small moments throughout my day. They may seem ordinary, but they often carry a quiet kind of beauty if we take the time to notice.

Perhaps you don't consider yourself a poet—and honestly, neither did I.

But maybe that's not the point.

Maybe the point is simply to pause. To notice. To write down a thought, a feeling, or something that made you smile. Those little moments may seem insignificant, yet they can become some of our most treasured memories.

So today, I leave you with a little invitation.

What inspired awe in you today?
